What happens when I come to therapy?

What will happen before my first session?

We encourage new and existing clients to book a minimum of three sessions in advance, so you can receive the most consistent and timely care possible.

Ahead of your first session, you will be emailed some forms to complete ahead of time. By completing and sending them back in advance, you will maximise the amount of time you have to talk with Kelly, so it’s strongly recommended you do your best to do this. If you have any concerns about completing your forms, please reach out to discuss this and we will help you as best we can. You can book in for your sessions here.

What will happen in my very first session?

Kelly will explain specifics like how psychologists approach confidentiality, and what her legal obligations are to protect you. She will then seek to get a really clear understanding of what’s happening for you, in your own words. Depending on your symptoms and referral type, Kelly will ask a variety of questions to ensure she can build the clearest picture possible.

At the end of the session, Kelly will explain next steps and encourage you to ask questions and provide feedback to ensure you get the most from your time. Sometimes, gathering information can take two or more sessions, but this is to ensure Kelly can tailor her approach to your specific symptoms and goals. Book your sessions here.

Will Kelly give me a diagnosis straight away?

Unlikely. It usually takes a few sessions to build a solid diagnosis, unless there are very obvious symptoms displayed. Kelly will discuss this with you in session though and of course you have every opportunity to ask questions if you want to.

Do I have to tell my doctor what Kelly said?

You’re welcome to, but Kelly will also contact your doctor to let them know that you have commenced sessions together and what the plan is going forward – this will happen after your first session together. When your 6 medicare sessions have been used up, Kelly will contact your doctor again and update them on what you’ve been collaborating on and what the ongoing goals are for working together.

Do I have to do anything specific in order to come to therapy?

If you wish to receive a Medicare rebate you will need to go to your GP first and get a Mental Health Care Plan. You’ll then need to give that to Kelly, so you can claim some money back for your sessions.

If you’re coming in under Workers Compensation, you don’t need to do anything other than book in your appointments according to your own availability. Kelly will take care of the communication with your case manager and other stakeholders for you.

Is it ok to cry, swear, or get angry during my sessions?

Absolutely! Infact, it’s encouraged to display your true emotions so Kelly is able to really understand how you feel about your current situation.

Will Kelly make me do homework?

More than likely. Evidence shows the skills and resources that are recommended in sessions only really become effective if you apply them in your day-to-day life. Kelly will collaborate with you to ensure your homework is meaningful and achievable though – there’s little point in asking you to run before you can walk.

Kelly’s goal is to provide you with a sense of mastery and success with every skill she suggests. If it doesn’t work for you though, or you don’t find it meaningful or easy to incorporate into your routine, Kelly will work with you to find something that does make sense.
